Illegal Wiretapping Useless in "War on Terror"
The Bush administration's surveillance policy has failed to make a dent in the war against al Qaeda.
U.S. law enforcement sources said that more than four years of surveillance by the National Security Agency has failed to capture any high-level al Qaeda operative in the United States. They said al Qaeda insurgents have long stopped using the phones and even computers to relay messages. Instead, they employ couriers.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania Republican, who was briefed by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on the matter, said he plans to hold hearings on the program by February 2006.
"There may be legislation which will come out of it [hearings] to restrict the president's power," Mr. Specter said.

People argue that the goverment's wiretapping invades people's privacy. I am not saying it is good, but what would be the point of listining to people's phone conversations? Yes it is/may be unconstitutional, but unless they really did have a reason, why would the goverment want to wiretap? It is just a waste of goverment dollers otherwise, and a source of bad rep. The goverment must have had some success with this tactic, or otherwise they would not keep doing it. Although it is true they may just keep doing it in the hope it will yeild some fruit yet. If that is the case, then I belive it is a (extremely) stupid thing to do.
I can't believe people actually think like you do. The point is not if wiretapping is an effective tool against terrorism. Storming into people's home at night, Nazi style, would also be pretty effective but is that how you want to live? That's why there are checks and balances. The government or law enforcement oversteps their bounds, there should always be someone there that will push back and say, NO YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR!
